From Uchiko to Homeslice, Austin continues to ship its best eateries over to Houston and we’re here for it. With P. Terry’s on the way – and hopefully Thundercloud in the cards – we can in the meantime enjoy another Austin favorite. Via 313, a Detroit-style pizzeria, has opened a brick-and-mortar location in Houston this March.
What is Detroit-Style Pizza?
Detroit-style pizza is a hearty, square-cut pizza featuring a thick, albeit light browned and chewy crust. It is not deep-dish, but rather closer to the spongy Sicilian focaccia, sfincione.
Another characteristic of Detroit-style pizza is the reversed order in which the ingredients are added: pepperoni, cheese, then sauce – this order helps to prevent sogginess of the crust.

What is Via 313?
Via 313 is an award-winning Detroit pizzeria based in Austin. Some of its accolades include ‘Independent Pizzeria of the Year’ by Pizza Today, ‘one of the very best pizzas’ by Food and Wine Magazine, and one of the ‘Top 10 Pizzas in America’ by the Food Network.
What’s on the menu?
In addition to Detroit-style classics, cheese and The Original Pepperoni, Via 313 features a variety of different options ranging from more Italian-inspired ‘za like The Rocket to more eccentric options like The 500, made with natural-casing pepperoni, jalapeño, and pineapple rings.
Via 313 also features a variety of thin-crust pizzas, with musically-inspired options ranging from The Stooges (baby spinach, marinated artichokes, shallot, and parmesan chips) to MC5 (whole milk mozzarella, asiago, fontina, provolone, and parmesan).
Salads, appetizers, and desserts are also available.
