It’s that dreaded time of the year, Houston: Tax Day. This is the time when federal income tax returns of US citizens are due for submissions to the federal government. If you’re making income, you probably have to pay taxes. When is Tax Day in Houston?
Tax Day in Houston is Monday, April 15. This is the final date when federal individual tax returns and tax payments are due.
What happens if I file my Texas taxes late?
According to the Texas Comptroller, the state levies a 5% penalty on individuals who file their taxes after the due date, April 15. If individuals file their taxes over 30 days after Tax Day, a second 5% penalty is added.
Can I apply for an extension in Texas?
If you can’t submit your federal income taxes by April 15, or forget to, individuals can apply. File form 4868 which will extend the due date to October 15. This doesn’t however mean that you withhold from paying until October 15, you still must pay the taxes that you think you owe before the extension date.
How do I file my taxes in Houston?

When is the Texas tax refund for 2024?
For federal income taxes, tax returns are expected in a period of around six weeks or more if you are due a refund.
What if I am a non-salary worker?
If you’re a real estate agent, non-salary worker, or other party that receives commission-based pay where there is no withholding done, parties need to pay their estimated tax payments for 2024 quarterly – at least to the amount of their 2023 tax liabilities quarterly – to avoid penalty and interest.
