It’s been a good couple months for Houston. From the opening of a breathtaking ‘glass treehouse’ restaurant, to a ’20s-era speakeasy opening behind a revolving bookshelf, a dream team fusion smokehouse, and even a steakhouse speakeasy,, Houston’s culinary scene continues to develop in the most amazing ways. Today, the scene continues on its upward course with the opening of RARE Steakhouse Restaurant & Lounge on Washington Avenue.
RARE is the brainchild of Don Bowie, chef/owner of Taste Kitchen & Bar, as well as Drip’d Donuts opening later this March. With RARE, Bowie intends to exhibit signature flavor profiles with elevated high-quality meat and seafood selections. The restaurant is housed in a two-story 8,000-square-foot re-conceptualized free-standing building. Its 62-seat dining room is outfitted in moody lighting fixtures, red-tufted booths, and marble flooring, while upstairs awaits a sultry 1,200-square-foot indoor/outdoor cocktail lounge. As a cherry on top, RARE also features an intimate patio cigar lounge.
“I’m honored to be bringing another dining concept to life in Houston, especially in the booming Washington Corridor,” said Bowie in a press release. “RARE is a unique concept that offers locals somewhere they can experience live entertainment, premier steak and seafood cuisine, and signature cocktails in an upscale and high-energy atmosphere.”
The restaurant’s menu features USDA prime steaks, high-quality seafood selections, as well as southern-inspired dishes and appetizers; the latter includes Crispy Cajun Calamari ($18), Green & Artichoke Dip ($15), and Charboiled Oysters ($35). Main dish features include: 14-oz New York Strip ($75), 32-oz Tomahawk ($175), Bourbon Glaze Berkshire Pork Chop ($45), and Suya Chilean Sea Bass ($15).
As for its sides, patrons can choose from an assortment of options such as Sweet Potato Souffle ($17), Blanco Mac and Cheese ($16), and Sweet Corn Brulee ($15). Dessert is also available, with options including Rum Butter Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream ($20) and Warm Lemon Pudding Cake ($15).
Notable partners in the project include rapper and philanthropist, Akon, as well as former Houston Texas wide receiver, Andre Johnson, have both partnered in the concept.
