Fall might technically start in September, but we all know there’s a lot of summer left to go. If you haven’t gotten enough sun yet this summer, we humbly recommend a beach trip.
While most – technically all – of the Houston beaches are located in Galveston, there are a number of unbelievable beaches near Houston accessible via a short road trip.
So pack your bags, fill up your cooler – and for Pete’s sake, remember your sunscreen – for a ride out to the best Houston beaches and beaches near Houston.
1-3. Galveston
Charles Barkley might not like it, but we sure do. Hometown of Sandy Cheeks, Galveston is a historical Gulf coast town home to a splendid amusement park, seafood havens, waterfront bars and restaurants, and oh yeah, beaches.
Galveston is home to seven beaches across 39 miles of coastline, here are some of our favorites:
- East Beach: Located on the eastern side of the coastal town, East Beach regularly attracts flocks of beach-goers as one of the most popular beaches in Galveston. The happening party area features a pavilion, boardwalk, and outdoor stage for concerts and other live events. In addition to the sun and sand, the area features on-site amenities, restrooms, and concessions. Bonus: East Beach permits alcohol – so be sure to have your coolers ready to go. 193-199 Seawall Blvd.
- Stewart Beach: If your beach trip is a family adventure, Stewart Beach is probably your spot. Situated at the intersection of the Seawall and Broadway, Stewart Beach listed on Family Vacation Critic’s “10 Best Beaches for Families” is home to yard games like cornhole, giant Jenga, and a beach volleyball court as well as other necessary amenities. Galveston, Texas 77550
- Galveston Island State Park: For a little nature fun, take a trip out to Galveston Island State Park. Having undergone renovations a couple years ago, the state park is better than ever. Spanning 4,000 acres from beach to bay, here visitors can enjoy fishing, birding, hiking, kayaking, and more. For the full natural experience, Galveston Island State Park is the only beach in Galveston where visitors can camp on the beach. 14901 FM3005, Galveston, TX 77554
4. Surfside Beach
For the adrenaline seekers out there looking for a little more action than boogie boarding, Surfside Beach is where go Point Break. As the name would suggest, Surfside Beach in Freeport is where you’ll find the tastiest waves the Gulf Coast town has to offer as well as options for jet skis, kayaks, and other watercraft rentals.

5. Bryan Beach
Bryan Beach in Freeport is a more secluded option for those looking to escape the crowds. It’s an undeveloped, natural beach, offering miles of pristine shoreline where you can enjoy fishing, camping, or simply relaxing in a peaceful environment. The lack of amenities means it’s ideal for those seeking a more rugged, back-to-nature experience.

Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula, just a ferry ride from Galveston, is home to seven miles of wild sandy shores. The area is a go-to for families for its relaxed and laidback atmosphere.
Here beachgoers young and old can comb the beaches, fish, and/or camp out on the beach. The beach is also super accessible, in that it allows for parking on the sand.
