Galveston is a bit of an enigma here in Texas. While some might disagree, we can’t help but adore the Texas coastal town – from its exciting amusement park, happening boardwalk, and historical downtown area: there’s much to love in Galveston. Evidently we’re not the only ones. Beloved animated characters Spongebob Squarepants and Sandy Cheeks venture out to Galveston in the new Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie.
Premiered on Netflix August 2nd, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie follows Sandy and Spongebob go on an adventure to Sandy Cheeks’ hometown state of Texas. After Sandy Cheeks’ employer, the Bureau Of Official Texas Science or B.O.O.T.S. lead by sinister CEO, Sue Nahmee, scoops Bikini Bottom out of the ocean, along with all its citizens, the two embark on a Galveston-bound journey to Sandy Cheeks’ hometown to get it back.
In Saving Bikini Bottom, the film portrays Galveston as something of a mountainous desert town. This is due to the fact that the movie was partly filmed in New Mexico, meant to represent Texas and the coastal vibes of Galveston while incorporating themes of ocean displacement.
Voice actors in Saving Bikini Bottom include Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy Cheeks, Tom Kenny as Spongebob Squarepants, Wanda Sykes as Sue Nahmee, Johnny Knoxville as Randy Cheeks, Craig Robinson as Pa Cheeks, Ilia Isorelys Paulino as Phoebe, and Matty Cardarople as Kyle.
This is not Galveston’s first Hollywood rodeo. Numerous films have been shot in Galveston, including: The Life of David Gale, Night Game, The Gulf, Crisis at Central High, and Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.
Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie was Netflix’s most-watched title of the week with 12.8 million views. It presently has a 1.6 score of Letterboxd.
