This spring in Houston is shaping up to be a blast – cooking up all sorts of festivals from the Montgomery County Fair & Rodeo, to FoodieLand, a Frida Festival, and more. Add this one to the list, Big Blanket, a giant picnic festival, is set to take over Sam Houston Park this April with checkered picnic blankets, snacks, games, and beverages for park goers.
Founded by Houston native and University of Houston alum, Caleb Matheson, Big Blanket is a community-driven event and initiative aimed at bringing people together for a large-scale picnic on one shared blanket and creating a space where socializing is effortless.
The event has grown since its inception and will return better than ever on Saturday, April 19. Running from 2 pm to sunset, the Big Blanket Super Picnic in Houston will feature all sorts of DJs, food trucks, crafts, games, and more. Slated activities here include a Giant Hula Hoop Contest, Giant 3-Leg Race, Giant Tug of War, and Giant Sack Race.
DJs set to spin at the festival include Maya Papaya, Saint Chris, Morgan Morgan, and DJ Bloom. Clutch BBQ and Tacos Bomberos will be present at the super picnic as well as a TBA vegan and dessert vendor.
Festival organizers encourage guests to bring picnic blankets, crafts, shade umbrellas, coolers, games, snacks, and N/A beverages. Regarding the latter, the festival will have alcohol available on-site. Other prohibited items include pets, outside alcohol, and smoking materials – this is in accordance with the city regulations per the festival.
Parking will be available at the garage at 1200 Bagby Street, which will have a reduced rate during the event – though space is limited so ride-share is encouraged.
Big Blanket Super Picnic takes place in Houston from 2 pm to sunset on Saturday, April 19, at Sam Houston Park located at 1000 Bagby Street. Tickets are now available through the event website. Before March 26, tickets are priced at $10, after which and before April 4, tickets will be available at $15. Tickets rise to $20 on April 11, and will be priced between then and the event at $25.
