What’s more Halloween than a haunted house? There’s haunted houses for children, what with styrofoam spiders, tombstone cutouts, and plastic vampire fangs, then there’s haunted houses for adults – with John Carpenter-level horror, nightmarish animatronics, and god knows what else.
For the freaks and ghouls out there, one of the “top 5 most terrifying haunted houses in the U.S.A.” is located right here in Houston: enter 13th Floor.
Now open on select dates until October’s end, 13th Floor is an essential Halloween season experience in Houston. This season, the haunted house features three thrilling attractions for daring visitors: The Deadlands, The Rot Shop, Midnight Mortuary, and Depths of Darkness.
The Deadlands takes place in a post apocalyptic world in which visitors are given the mission of eliminating swarths of infected mutants while uncovering the truth of a deadly virus’s origins.
Their eerie Rot Shop exhibition sets visitors among a group of bloodthirsty, chainsaw-wielding prisoners as they attempt to find their way out of the haunting the remains of an old slaughterhouse.
Depths of Darkness takes place amid a dark and stormy night. Visitors soon become aware of an eerie song, and begin to notice strange – almost otherworldly – behavior coming of the local villagers. A nightmarish figure soon awakens – fright ensues.
In addition to their frightening exhibits, 13th Floor also features a mini escape room wherein groups are prompted to uncover clues and solve riddles before time runs out.
The Houston haunted house experience also features Zombie Apocalypse live, in which players assume the task of mowing down live zombies with GellyBall Guns – basically paintball guns but safer and not as painful. Additionally, visitors can try their hand at axe-throwing – to be clear, axes are thrown into wooden targets not zombies.
Either to calm your nerves before the exhibit, or settle them afterwards, 13th Floor also features an on-site bar, Bar 13. Here, visitors can imbibe from a selection of themed libations and/or purchase concessions. Or, so they choose, they can slink into The Hideout, the area haunted house speakeasy.
13th Floor is open on select nights this October, for a clear picture on their schedule, visit their website here. The haunted house is located at 7075 Farm to Market 1960 Road West Ste 20.
