Since its release in 2001, Shrek has spawned a successful franchise comprised of 4-feature-length movies, including a Shrek the Halls special, as well as two spin-offs. Furthermore, the character and franchise hero has transcended its entertainment medium, turning into a one-size-fits-all meme – something which confounds even the writers here at Secret Houston.
Suffice to say, however, that Shrek is as much embedded in the zeitgeist as it was over 20 years ago. In celebration of all things Shrek, Rise Rooftop is hosting a themed rave on October 1.
Rise Rooftop is a 13,000-square-foot entertainment venue in Houston. In addition to striking architecture, vibrant lighting fixtures, and soaring ceilings, the venue features a state-of-the-art retractable rooftop.
On October 1, the venue is hosting their first Shrek-themed rave. As with the meme culture surrounding Shrek, the rave is self-aware of its absurdity. The message, “It’s dumb, just come have fun,” is featured on the event poster.
However, with the exception of ticket prices, which are now on sale for $20 (+ fees), not much is known about the rave’s details. On the ticketing website, the event references the first Shrek rave held in LA this past July. Wherein, a plethora of adoring Shrek fans came bearing costumes, green paint, and even some onions.
“We all consumed that at the same time, so we all have a kinship with it,” said party host, Jordan Craig said in an interview. “It’s one of the two things I feel like everyone watched that no one feels embarrassed by.”
The Shrek-themed rave is going down from 9 pm to 2 am on October 1 at Rise Rooftop. For more details, visit their website here.
