As the incomparable Houston comic, Ali Siddiq, once said: “Houston is the powerhouse of comedy in the South.” The city will continue to live up to its reputation for comedy this September with the addition of a new comedy club, Punch Line. The storied San Francisco-based comedy club will open its first Texas location this summer in Downtown, Houston.
The Punch Line Comedy Club goes back to the late ’70s. For over 45 years, the venue has been a destination for comedians and comedy fans alike. The venue, which has locations in San Francisco, Sacramento, and Philadelphia, is known for its intimate atmosphere where established stand-ups often practice, hone, and craft their material.
The venue will also offer a number of open-mics for local aspiring comedians, as well as provide opportunities for them to open for touring headliners.
“We’re so excited to provide a platform for Houston comedians and bring more national touring comedians to the city,” said Head of Comedy Operations for Punch Line, Amanda Kyser. “Houstonians have such a deep appreciation for comedy that will make today’s top comics feel right at home here.”
Punch Line Comedy Club is slated to host its first show in Downtown, Houston on September 13th at 1204 Caroline St. Over 30 scheduled shows for its initial run go on sale on June 21. Scheduled performances include Ian Fidance, Angelo Colina, Mekki Leeper, Jay Jurden, Chanté Wayas, Mark Curry, Liza Treyger, Sophie Buddie, and more.
“When I started my comedy career in San Francisco, the Punch Line was a crucial local institution that provided a nurturing community,” said native Houston comedian Sheng Wang.
“We gathered there weekly like church for the Sunday showcases, highlighting local talents and providing a path forward for those who dreamed of being a working comic. The club was also where aspiring comics could watch and learn from the great talents coming through town every week.”
Punch Line Houston opens on September 13 at 1204 Caroline St. in Downtown, Houston. The club joins the ranks of the city’s other incredible comedy venues, including: The Houston Improv, Secret Group, Riot Comedy Club, and more.
