It’s that time of year again, Houston. We all know drivers have… a reputation. But it’s time to ease off the gas, because Operation Slowdown is fast approaching. Here is everything you need to know about Operation Slowdown in Houston.
What is Operation Slowdown?
To highlight the dangers and financial costs of speeding, TxDOT is teaming up with Texas law enforcement – including the Houston Police Department and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office – for an annual statewide speed enforcement and public education campaign, Be Safe. Drive Smart. or Operation Slowdown.
The ultimate goal of the initiative is to reduce speed-related fatalities and serious crashes across the Lone Star State.
“Speeding is the leading factor in deadly crashes, accounting for roughly one-third of all traffic fatalities statewide. In 2025, speeding played a role in more than 150,000 traffic crashes in Texas, resulting in 1,247 fatalities and 5,652 serious injuries,” TxDOT reports.
During the campaign, expect to see a massive increase in law enforcement on the roads. Officers will be stepping up their patrols to target speeding and aggressive driving violations. Not only will they be handing out more tickets, but police cruisers will also be spending extra time driving the exact speed limit to physically remind motorists what a safe speed looks like.
When is Operation Slowdown in Texas?
According to TxDOT, Operation Slowdown will run statewide from July 18 through August 2, 2026.
How to avoid getting ticketed during Operation Slowdown?
Because Operation Slowdown means heavier police patrols, you are practically guaranteed to see more police cruisers on Houston’s highways. To avoid a citation, you should always drive the posted speed limit, adjust your speed for heavy traffic or Houston’s unpredictable summer thunderstorms, and watch out for work and school zones – notably, penalties are double for speeding in these active areas.
All drivers and passengers are urged to remain buckled up at all times.
