Come the holiday season, Space City burns bright with constellations of holiday light displays. From dazzling neighborhoods, to pop-up winter wonderlands, the city lights up for the holidays. Perhaps the most unique light display in Houston during the holiday season, is Cistern Illuminated at Buffalo Bayou Park. Houston’s underground will soon feature the multi-sensory Journey Through Light and Sound, featuring a hypnotic spectacle of color, illusion, and echo.
The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern is Houston’s massive underground chamber, rediscovered only by accident in 2010 when the city was developing Buffalo Bayou Park. The cavernous, 87,500-square-foot space features astonishing architecture with over 200 slender, 25-foot-high concrete columns creating an echo chamber like no other.
On November 28, the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern will light up with the return of Cistern Illuminated. Created by artist/engineer Kelly O’Brien, the multi-sensory experience will comprise of transcendent light displays synched to hypnotic soundscapes specifically designed to build off the extraordinary, cavernous acoustics of the space.
Throughout its run this holiday season, Cistern Illuminated will also see special live performances in the venue. On select evenings, Ars Lyrica will perform their experiential, multi-cultural composition Ring in the Peace. The 20-minute composition is curated by Cecilia Duarte and Jesus Pacheco and draws inspiration all the way back to the ninth century.
Cistern Illuminated at the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern runs from November 28 to January 18, 2026. Tickets are now available through the Buffalo Bayou Park Partnership. The experience will be available at multiple times Wednesday through Sunday during its run. Tickets are priced at $15, with discounts available to military, students, and seniors. Youth tickets (9 – 17) are priced at $12.
Ars Lyrica’s Ring in Peace will perform on the following dates:
- December 8, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 29
- January 6, 8, 9
Tickets are priced at $25 per person for ages 9 and up.
