It’s going to be a great fall for film in Houston. On the heels of the historic River Oaks Theatre opening this October, the Houston Cinema Festival is setting the stage for November.
Kicking off on November 7, the 10-day Houston Cinema Arts Festival will feature a curated selection of films including the 10th annual CineSpace short film competition with NASA, and 5th annual Borders | No Borders regional short film competition.
CineSpace is one of the festival’s highlights. Done in collaboration with NASA, the competition allows for filmmakers to make creative works using actual NASA imagery. Borders | No Borders is a short film-making competition that spotlights narrative and documentary films from Texas and surrounding areas.
The festival also features various Q&A sessions with directors, actors, and industry professionals as well as workshops, panels, live performances, and art installations.
Previous special guests at the Houston Cinema Arts Festival have included Richard Linklater, Tilda Swinton, Ethan Hawke, and Robert Redford.
Organizers plan to release the film, performance, and special guest lineup on October 10 with a special Lineup Release Party at Axelrad Beer Garden.
Last year’s festival included a selection of films screened at theaters across Houston that emphasized community and growth within the filmmaking community with the theme “Bring it on Home.” This year, the films will reflect on the diversity of the Houston community.
