Houston has another feather to put in its nightcap. In this year’s edition of The Best Bars in America 2024, Esquire has named three Houston bars on its list: all of which are located in Montrose.
From highly accoladed breweries, elevated rooftop bars, dives, and one James Beard Award-winning cocktail bar, the beverage scene in Houston is truly top shelf.
The city has once again received national recognition for its wonderful bar culture, this time in Esquire’s list of The Best Bars in America 2024.
Houston bars named on the list include: Refuge, Light Years, and Little’s Oyster Bar – all of which can be found in Montrose.
Opened in May 2022, Refuge is a moody cocktail den from the mind of Bobby Heugel. Owner and proprietor of sister-concept, Anvil, as well as Better Luck Tomorrow, Squable, and The Pastry War, Bobby Heugel is a Houston-based mixologist maven.
His Refuge bar carries the torch of the since-shuttered Tongue Cut Sparrow. The intimate and stylish bar features a three-fold cocktail menu of Classics & Riffs, Excessives, and Originals. When visiting, be sure to try the Greenhorn, Eastern Non-Sour, and/or Pantone 359.

Light Years is a natural wine bar housed inside… well, a house in Montrose. Owned by Steve Buechner, Light Years is an intimate space adorned with lush accents, cozy seating and disco ball for good measure. Here you can find a wide variety of natural wine, including a good amount of international bottles available to drink on site or takeaway.

Located in the space formerly occupied by Pappas Seafood House, Little’s Oyster Bar is a Montrose-based, hand-selected seafood restaurant. Pair your plates of oysters, shellfish, and caviar (if you’re feeling frisky) with their assortment of champagne, wine, and cocktails. As for the latter, be sure to try The Windward Isle.
