All systems are go for a new, next-generation library is set to launch in Houston. Following a special preview earlier this December, the high-tech Dr. Shannon Walker Neighborhood Library is set to open soon.
Named after NASA’s first Houston astronaut, the Dr. Shannon Walker Neighborhood Library will replace the Meyer Neighborhood Library – which was destroyed during Hurricane Harvey – and Frank HPL Express Library.
According to John Middleton, Assistant Director of Space for the Houston Public Library, it will be “the most advanced library of its kind”.
The cutting-edge new library is located at 5505 Belrose Drive in Westbury spans 23,260 square feet with many built-in nooks and crannies straight out of the future.
In addition to books, the new library will feature a cafe with robotic vending machines, a space-themed teen room with lounges and computers, a children’s area for arts & crafts and other children’s programs, and private study spaces.
The Dr. Shannon Walker Neighborhood Library will also feature a first-of-its-kind podcast space in addition to a complete recording studio hooked up with with brand new recording equipment, instruments, and sound board, as well as a video recording room with green screen.
Officials held a special sneak preview earlier this December. This coming February, the library is expected to officially open to the public.
Other developments in store for Houston include: East Blocks, 10 blocks in Houston’s East Downtown turning into network of bars, restaurants, shops, and green spaces; Astros announce planned entertainment district off Minute Maid Park; Houston community modeled after Japanese fishing village coming to Houston.
