June 21st marked the start of summer. In the first official week of summer, Houston is expected to experience temperatures in the mid 90s with a heat index temperatures above 100 degrees every day of the week from June 24 to June 30.
Following a mixed week of rain and heat, Houston is in for a string of heat. In the last week of June, Houston is expected to experience temperatures in the mid 90s with head index or feels like temperatures in the 100s.
Heat index temperatures will top out at 106 degrees from Tuesday to Friday. Heat withstanding, Houston also faces a potential showers and thunderstorms with percentages wavering in the 20-30% range daily until Sunday.
In wake of the heat, NWS recommends staying hydrated with plenty of water, spending time in air conditioning, wearing lightweight clothing that’s light-colored and lose. Furthermore, the company recommends checking in on elderly or ill loved ones, bringing pets indoors and giving them plenty of water. Pets and children should not be left unattended in vehicles.
As of yet, no heat advisories are in effect.
Earlier this year, the Almanac predicted a hot, muggy, and stormy summer for Texas. Last year, Houston experienced its hottest year on record with 45 days of triple-digit temperatures – including 21 consecutive plus 100-degree days in August.
Last year, Houston experienced its sixth-warmest recorded June at a temperature of 85.1 degrees. According to Beaumont Enterprise, there is a 33% chance that Texas will experience its warmest summer on record, with a 99% chance that it will be one of its top 5 warmest.
According to forecasters, the prevalence of heat domes, or persistent areas of high pressure, will be a determining factor in heat conditions for this summer.
