How are you celebrating Earth Day today, Houston? In between exploring the great outdoors that Houston has to offer – be it the city’s parks, gardens, and hiking trails – be sure to stop by H-E-B to get your free reusable bag as a part of its annual Earth Day initiative.
We don’t think its any stretch to say that H-E-B is one of the most, if not the most, unanimously beloved institutions in Texas. It’s not just us either, the grocer was recently named the best supermarket retailer in the country.
In celebration of Earth Day, H-E-B will be giving away 265,000 free reusable bags at its area locations. The initiative kicks off today, April 22, at 1 pm, in which all of H-E-B’s associated stores in Texas, Central Market, Mi Tienda, and Joe V’s Smart Shop, will give away bags while supplies last.
This year’s bag is an homage to Big Bend Ranch Texas State Park, the first of more Texas state park-themed reusable tote bags the store plans to create over the coming years. Since the company began their Earth Day initiative, it has given away over 3 million bags to the public.

The company also hosted their other Earth Day initiative: H-E-B Annual School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge, in which participating schools collected and returned plastic bags to H-E-B in return for H-E-B gift cards. The initiative resulted in over five million plastic bags being returned.
In the Houston region, Coulson-Tough Elementary, Pine Shadows Elementary, and Robertson Elementary schools recycled the most bags.
Over the past few days, Texas State Park rangers held booths in participating stores across the state in celebration of Earth Day. This past year, H-E-B donated $1 million to the Texas State Parks Centennial.
