Here everything is the best. It comes as no surprise that H-E-B has topped yet another annual national supermarket ranking. This time, the Texas-based supermarket chain lead the way on dunnhumby’s annual grocery ranking, beating out the likes of Amazon and Costco among others.
Originating in 1905 as a modest family-owned grocery store in Kerrville, Texas, H-E-B has evolved into the most cherished supermarket chain in this region. Although it is customary to express admiration for H-E-B in the Lone Star State, it is a pleasant revelation when the grocery chain receives the well-deserved acknowledgment on a national level.
Described as the “global leader in customer data science,” dunnhumby recently published their seventh annual Retailer Preference Index (RPI). Going off of RPI, dunnhumby ranked 65 industry retailers, weighing financial results with customer perception of quality, speed and convenience, digital, operations, price, promotions, and rewards.
The group makes a point to state that the survey identify the best positioned retailers for the future and why that it is the case.
The top 5 of the list are as follows:
1) H-E-B
2) Amazon
3) Costco Wholesale
4) Market Basket
5) Sam’s Club
This marks the third time that the study ranked H-E-B as the top national retail grocer since the study began in 2018. As to the secret of H-E-B’s success, the study points to the retailer’s ability to “deliver a combination of better savings and better experience/assortment, supported by time savings through superior digital capabilities.”
Compared to Amazon, which was named second on the list, H-E-B bested the online behemoth in the two most important indicators: quality and price, promotions, and rewards.
The study also highlights the role that H-E-B serves in giving back to the local community: “H-E-B is Texas, so laser focused on the state and the communities in it that it get top marks for localization of the assortment and local community connection.”
