If there’s anything that all Texans can agree on, is the unadulterated glory that is H-E-B. Tracing all the way back to 1905, what began as a small family grocer in Kerrville, Texas, has become the most universally beloved grocery chain around these parts. While singing its praises in the Lonestar State is the norm, it’s a nice surprise when H-E-B gets the national recognition it deserves.
Iconic culinary magazine, Food & Wine, recently released a new ranking ‘The Best Supermarkets In America’. Landing at the top spot was Texas’s own H-E-B:
“Even Texans already deeply loyal to the hometown favorite found new ways to fall in love with the nation’s best supermarket chain, which began back in 1905 as Mrs. Florence Butt’s general store, up in the Hill Country,” the magazine stated in the publication.
“What was already good — the affordable prices on a wide range of high-quality own-brand products, the in-store tortillerias, the excellent curbside pickup program — has gotten even better. There are those who think they are shopping at the best supermarkets in the country, and then there are the H-E-B shoppers who know this for a fact.”
If so inclined, Houstonians can also visit other top contenders on the best supermarkets in the country including Trader Joe’s (#8), Publix (#9), and Costco (#10).
While we’ve all got our favorite products at H-E-B – chicken pot stickers are an absolute must pick-up for us – but perhaps less known is that H-E-B also has a 98,000-square-foot Mexican outlet that regularly fires up scratch-made tortillas, traditional baked goods, and marinated Mexican meats.
Additionally, Houstonians can find authentic Filipino food at Top Cafe, a family-owned restaurant inside the H-E-B at 14498 Bellaire Blvd.
