Elon Musk Is Building A Mega Battery Into Texas’s Power System

Let’s hope this helps.

Like the Energizer Bunny, Elon Musk doesn’t stop. The charged-up tech entrepreneur, amid building space bases, launching rockets, and creating his own city in Texas, is now overseeing the construction of a mega battery which he hopes to add to Texas’ deleterious energy grid system. [Featured image: @Britta Pedersen / POOL / AFP]

After the disastrous winter storms exposed the frailty of Texas’s independent energy system, it became all too clear that the system requires massive restructuring.

Gambit Energy Storage LLC, listed as a subsidiary of Tesla under the filing of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, has been surreptitiously building 100 megawatt battery-storage facility in Angleton, Texas south of Houston. Such facility is used to store wind and solar-produced electricity. According to Bloomberg, the battery of such scale could “power about 20,000 homes on a hot summer day”.

Amid the winter storms, millions of Texans were left without power and water for days on end. The Energy Reliability Council of Texas issued a Level 3 Energy Emergency Alert, in which officials resorted to rolling outages throughout the state over the course of nearly a week. According to the company, it was mere minutes away from months-long uncontrollable outages.

The failure of the company has lead to an investigation ordered by Greg Abbott and nationwide ridicule – Musk included:

According to Bloomberg, the Tesla subsidiary’s battery-storage facility is registered to ERCOT. A senior director of system planning at Ercot has stated that the operation’s completion is set for June 1.

In other news, Elon Musk is currently creating his own city in Texas called “Starbase”.
