For over half a century, Dickens on the Strand has been one of Texas’s most unique and beloved holiday traditions, transporting the historic streets of Galveston back to 19th-century London.
This immersive festival celebrates its 52nd anniversary this year. Taking place this year from December 5 to 7, Dickens on the Strand is far more than just a typical holiday fair. Presented by the British Consulate-General Houston, it’s a full-scale Victorian fantasy where the sights, sounds, and literary spirit of Charles Dickens come alive across the Strand Mechanic National Historic Landmark District.
A Literary Wonderland on the Coast
Prepare to encounter the very world Dickens wrote about – and is credited for popularizing. As you stroll the historic avenue, you’ll be greeted by costumed street vendors hawking their wares from rolling carts and street stalls, the lively sound of roaming characters like Oliver Twist and Tiny Tim, and the general festive chaos of a bygone era.
Beyond the main street festival, a variety of ticketed special events offer deeper dives into the Victorian experience. Keep an eye out for this year’s featured gatherings, such as the the Jubilation Ringers Handbell Concerts, The Smoking Bishop’s Soiree, and Elevenses on the Pier.
Vendor Market
Of course, no festival is complete without sustenance and shopping! The grounds will be peppered with dozens of vendors offering holiday food, warm drinks, and unique gifts perfect for filling your Christmas stockings. You’ll find everything from savory treats to enticing libations.
As one of the defining features of Dickens on the Strand, the festival features a bustling and theatrical marketplace of vendors from a different era. Donning period-accurate costumes and aesthetics, vendors here will sell everything from mead to blacksmith goods, pancakes, books, and bells.

Meet the Descendants
One of the staples of the Galveston festival is the chance to meet the direct descendants of Charles Dickens, himself. This 2025, the festival will feature an appearance by Dickens’ great-great-great-grandson Oliver “Ollie” Dickens all weekend long.
Contests Galore
Don’t miss the famed Whimsical Whisker Revue (a facial hair competition!), the elegant Victorian Costume Contest, literary short story contest, and the hilarious Dickens Victorian Bed Races. In addition, the festival will feature new contests that include keg lifting, fast-feast-challenge, as well as Highland Games demonstrations.
Daily Parades
A spectacular array of processions are slated to parade through the Galveston Historic District this weekend, including The Queen’s Parade on Saturday afternoon, Pickwick’s Lanternlight Parade Saturday evening, and The Queen’s Parade on Sunday afternoon.
Other New Events This Year
Throughout the festival, Dickens on the Strand will feature a festive array of special events, ranging from parades, to live entertainment (across four stages), and exciting new activations like the Shopkeeper Skills Village and Tiny Tim’s Play Land.
Other new featured experiences this year include the Artful Dodger’s After Dark. Here, the festival will create a nightlife experience inspired by the iconic Dickens’ character, where visitors can immerse themselves into “a world of firelight, fog, and festive mischief”. The 21+ experience will take place this Saturday, December 6, at The Galveston Historic Seaport complete with fire dancers, aerialists, and more.
