Coming back bigger and better than ever, longtime Montrose staple Baba Yega, is finally re-opening this year. Slated to open somewhere in spring/summer 2023, the new-and-improved restaurant will feature over 400 seats, two kitchens, fireside lounge, and a beer garden.
In its 40 years of service, Baba Yega was renowned for its Mediterranean cuisine, vegetarian options, and Sunday brunch buffet. In 2018, the restaurant was consumed by a fire.
Originally, the restaurant was supposed to open the following year. Four years later, delayed by the pandemic and construction mishaps, the restaurant is finally ready to re-open.
The remodeled restaurant, owned by the partnership of Executive Chef Sue Nowamooz, husband Ashkan Nowamooz, and Fred Shariki of SFT Investments, is set to feature a “meandering, modern, Mediterranean-style playland comprised of several adjacent, historic bungalows with large patio spaces – perfect for a variety of dining and drinking experiences,” according to Houston Chronicle.
New restaurant add-ons include a beer garden, fireside lounge, Jasmine Room private event space, full bar, two kitchens, and more.
In an effort to remodel the interiors in the image of Montrose, the group tapped Gin Design Group – a Houston-based group responsible for Mala Sichuan MKT, Palace Social, Traveler’s Table, and the downtown Common Bond.
As for its menu, the restaurant is renowned for its plant-based options. Past menu features included Hippie Meatloaf, Basil Sunshine Sandwich.
In other restaurant opening news, Bun B’s Trill Burgers is opening its first brick-and-mortar at the former James Coney Island at 3607 South Shepherd in Montrose in early 2023.
Also, famed South American eatery, Nando’s Peri Peri Chicken is slated to open not one but two outposts in Houston with a location in Post Oak Plaza in Uptown and La Centerra in Katy this Spring.
