In February 1996, Wes Anderson released his debut film, Bottle Rocket. This little indie flick, understated as it is, would mark the beginnings of a visionary artist embarking on an impeccable career. Three decades and 11 feature films later, Wes is coming home to Houston for one night in support of the preservation of the historic Garden Oaks Theater and new Arts & Film Center.
Arthouse Houston will host an evening with Wes Anderson on Friday, July 17, 2026, at Zilkha Hall in Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. The event starts at 6 pm with a Founders Experience. Doors open to public ticket holders at 7 pm. Here the reception will feature food ad drinks, a live auction, and live music performed by Kelly Doyle Trio.
Anderson will then personally introduce five of his short films. The screening will feature the original Bottle Rocket short – the short film co-written by Wes and Owen Wilson while the two were college students at the University of Texas, later adapted into a full feature. Screenings will also include Castello Cavalcanti, Hotel Chevalier, The Swan, and The Private Dining Room of the Police Commissioner.
Attendees holding Founders Experience tickets will join a private meet-and-greet and Q&A session with Anderson before the main show, complete with a celebratory toast and a signed poster.
Tickets serve as a donation to Arthouse Houston’s Big Picture Series. Support directly funds the preservation of the historic Garden Oaks theater, transforming it into a community hub for cinema, performance, and education.
Founded in 2021 as Friends of River Oaks Theatre, Arthouse Houston is a community-based nonprofit building a thriving independent film hub. The nonprofit celebrates cinema, supports artists, and preserve historic theaters.
Tickets to the Wes Anderson Homecoming Soirée are available at the Arthouse Houston website. Founders Experience tickets are priced at $1,000. General tickets start at $350 for mezzanine seating; $5000 for orchestra seating.
