Texas Teachers Would Earn A Minimum Of $70,000 A Year Under Proposed Bill

Rep. James Talarico has filed HB 3580, a bill that would raise teachers’ minimum yearly salary to $70,000.

State Representative, James Talarico, announced on Thursday that he has filed a bill that would mandate a minimum teacher salary of $70,000 for Texas teachers.

Talarico is presently the youngest member of the Texas Legislature. He also serves on the Public Education Committee, Calendars Committee, and Juvenile Justice and Family Issues Committee.

Talarico got his bachelor’s degree in government from the University of Texas before earning his master’s degree in education policy at Harvard. After which, Talarico taught sixth grade in San Antonio and was the Central Texas Executive Director of a non-profit that supplied students with technology.

“When I was a public sschool teacher, I struggled to make ends meet,” Talarico wrote in a Twitter post. “My coworkers drove Ubers at night and sold their blood plasma for extra money. Today I filed a bill mandating a minimum salary of $70,000 for every teacher in Texas.”

“In only 12 months, our teachers have endured a global pandemic, an economic collapse, and a deadly winter storm,” said Talarico. “I’m filing HB 3580 mandating a minimum salary of $70,000 for every teacher in Texas because our educators deserve nothing less.”
