The Sugar Room is the sweetest speakeasy in Houston.
Last year, So Clutch, the owners of the Concrete Cowboy, Clutch Bar, and a host of establishments in other US cities, opened the doors of the Sugar Room on Washington Avenue. The Sweet bakery on Washington Avenue is unassuming enough. A quaint little bakery one might think. Sure, they’re location on Washington Avenue surrounded by some of the most action-packed weekend bars in the city is a little suspect, but otherwise the colorful selection of macaroons, cupcakes, and cookies would convince you that this bake shop has got nothing to hide.
Which may make the existence of a high-end speakeasy all the more surprising. A little detour past the pantry room leads you to a secret door that opens up to the Sugar Room. The high-class cocktail lounge has a retro-chic vibe: low-lit, somewhat posh with exposed brick walls, halo chandeliers, gold-trimmed drink trolleys, furnished with leather-bound couches and vintage, indigo-splashed wing chairs.
Their mixology menu features an assortment of eye-catching cocktails, including: the Garnet Manhattan, Gunsmoke, La Bishon, Rose Colored Glasses, and The Hef — which features pear, honeycomb, and flamed apple-vanilla bitters. However, the prices come with the territory, as each will cost $15.
The word has already gotten out about the speakeasy. Expect lines on weekends. There is a (somewhat vague) dress code at the Sugar Room: no ball caps or tennis shoes.
If you’re looking to mix it up one night with a laid-back, yet class-cut atmosphere with top shelf drinks and decadent sweets, the Sugar Room is where you want to go!
