Though the Houston heat would have you think otherwise, today is the first official day of summer. In celebration of an action-packed summer, Rooftop Cinema Club has announced their seasonal program from now until September 5, with blockbusters, cult-classics, tearjerkers, horror shows, true cinema, and a whole lot of Harry Potter.
The Rooftop Cinema Club is an open-air theater on top of the Whole Foods in BLVD Place. It provides an atmosphere of what’s been called “social cinema” wherein viewers at times walk around and interact with the environment during the course of the movie.
After going on Spring Break, the Rooftop Cinema Club will turn the projector back on in BLVD Place today on June 21.
Starting June 21, the screenings will include blockbusters such as Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Top Gun, and Bad Boys; burning romantic movies such as Dirty Dancing, 500 Days of Summer, Crazy, Stupid, Love, Pretty Woman, and The Notebook; and cult classics like Beetlejuice, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Purple Rain, The Big Lebowski, The Goonies, and High Fidelity.
Additionally, visitors can enjoy a frighteningly fun program of horror films, including: Scream – the original as well as the latest one – Nightmare on Elm Street, Get Out, American Psycho, Candyman (2021), and Halloween Kills; true cinema such as Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Casablanca, The Princess Bride, Leon: The Professional, and Do The Right Thing; as well as much-needed comic relief in movies likes Superbad, Bridesmaids, Friday, Step Brothers, and Pitch Perfect.
There will be screenings of coming-of-age classics like Mean Girls, 10 Things I Hate About You, and The Sandlot, as well as a showing of every Harry Potter film over the next few months.
Tickets and the full program are available here.
For other al fresco movie-going experiences, Moonstruck Drive-In located at Midway’s 150-acre East River development on 100 Bringhurst St. screens a variety of 4K features on a 80 x 40-foot screen with a stunning skyline backdrop. Per tradition, the cinema announces their weekend program on Monday evenings – so stay tuned to their website for updates!
