Diversity has always shined in Resurrection MCC in Houston, but that’s not been without its challenges. The church has been committed to equality since it was founded in 1972 as a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ people in the Heights. Over the years, its congregation has suffered its fair share of threats, challenges and setbacks, but the church has stood strong in defiance. It serves as a pillar of unity and strength for the local community, warmly welcoming everyone who walks through its doors.
What makes Resurrection MCC so special?
Throughout the 70s and 80s, the church’s congregation received threats of violence from hate groups that were met with indifference when reported to the authorities. Fast forward to 2001, and the church was completely flooded after Storm Alison hit Houston. But despite all the obstacles they’ve faced, Resurrection MCC has supported local communities in need for over 50 years.
In the 80s and 90s, the church served as a refuge for victims of the AIDS crisis, while more recently, they’ve run countless fundraisers to raise funds for queer charities and homeless people in Houston. They provide an inclusive safe space where people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and ethnic backgrounds are received with open arms.
