Facts, Curiosities and Interesting Things about Majestic Metro
1. Majestic Metro was formerly known as The Ritz Theatre.
The building was designed by renowned Houston architect William Ward Watkin, who you might know for his work in the The Museum of Fine Arts and several buildings at Rice University. The structure was finished in 1926 and it’s the only remaining Houston theatre built before 1930. The theatre’s grand opening saw a screening of “The Fighting Buckaroo”.
2. The evolution of the theatre through the decades.
Just four years later, the theatre changed owners and was led by local theatreman Will Horwitz. A decade later, the Ritz Theatre only ran Spanish language films, particularly from Mexican cinema. The name was eventually changed to Teatro Ritz and later to Cine Ritz. Whereas, in the seventies, as it was taken over by Alvin Guggenheim, the theatre screened exploitation movies and the name changed to Majestic Metro.
3. From Ritz Theatre to Majestic Metro.
In 1990, the building was beautifully restored to become one of Houston’s premier special events venues. However, the venue’s new owners remained pretty loyal to the original theatre design. Today, Majestic Metro boasts amazing state-of-the-art sound and dance lighting system, multimedia video projection and custom lighting for anyone interested in celebrating their next big event there.
