The Farmer’s Almanac and the NOAA have recently released their fall predictions reports for the United States. Throughout this month, past the official first day of fall, on Saturday, September 23, above-average temperatures are expected to persist as will present rainfall (or lack thereof) conditions.

It isn’t until November, that chances for rainfall will increase to a level between 40% to 70% – consistent with Farmers’ Almanac’s predictions for a “crisp & cool wet” season. Around this time temperatures are expected to fall slightly but still remain at a 33% to 40% probability for slightly above-average weather.
As for the fall foliage, the Farmers’ Almanac predicts that it will peak between November 2 and November 11.
What’s the process behind these splendid autumnal hues? It is a well-known fact that leaves consistently generate chlorophyll, which imparts their characteristic green hue. However, during the autumn season, as the nights grow longer, the production of chlorophyll gradually diminishes, ultimately ceasing altogether. This phenomenon leads to a transformation in color, showcasing the presence of carotenoids and anthocyanin in the leaves, as elucidated by the US Department of Agriculture.
