The Heights continues to grow into one of Houston’s most sought-after communities.
It’s hip and buzzing in The Heights. Soon, it’ll be walkable, too. While you’ve probably taken a stroll down 19th street, you’d be hard-pressed getting in and around there without a car. Enter m•k•t, the new trail-based project that aims to weave the community into greater Houston. [Featured image courtesy of hsuoffice.com]
It’s a project that comes in the midst of Houston’s massive city-wide urban transformation initiative. The Bayou Greenways Initiative plans to create over 150 miles of walking trails by the end of 2020. Equally distant between Downtown and The Galleria, The Heights will effectively become the epicenter of this $200 million initiative.
The Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) railroad line is the inspiration behind the name m•k•t. Soon the railway, since abandoned, will be repurposed into the form of a hike-and-bike trail.
m•k•t is a project designed by the Michael Hsu Office of Architecture and Method Architecture. If you recall, the former is responsible for many of the projects centered on transforming Houston’s cityscape.
The mixed-use project envisions over 200,000 sq. ft. of transformed space, 30 new-and-inspired retail and dining options, 5 buildings for creative adaptation, and 4 acres of landscaped greenspace.
As such, locals in and outside The Heights will have the opportunity to access all the restaurants, bars, retail, and businesses available in m•k•t.
At this moment, m•k•t is welcoming food, leisure, and retail vendors but has yet to announce specifics. There is still no word on its projected completion date.
