What is “We Call It Tango”?
Over the course of three acts, “We Call It Tango” takes spectators on a magical journey of music and dance, telling a story of a talented tango dancer in 1950s Buenos Aires. A professional tango dance duo, talented pianist and a bandoneon player will perform 13 famous tangos on the night, and each tango represents a range of emotions and feelings that audiences can feel as the performers grace the stage.
Tango, its music and the show
The exact origins of tango are not entirely known, but it’s believed that the dance originated in the working-class areas of Buenos Aires sometime around 1880. Inspired by a range of dances and musical styles, the art form is a rich mixture of cultures from a host of countries, from Argentina to Cuba, parts of Africa and beyond.
At “We Call It Tango” in Houston, the 150-year-old art form gets an unforgettable tribute that’s as authentic as it is magical. Kicking off this dazzling show is Astor Piazzolla’s “Adiós Nonino” followed closely by Osvaldo Fresedo’s “Vida Mía” and many more famous tangos. As talented musicians work their magic on these iconic tangos, each lustrada (the action of rubbing your foot up against your partner’s leg) and every abrazo (embrace) of the dancers feels more intense than the last.
