In honor of the incomparable civil rights leader, the MLK Grande Parade and Black Heritage Society have teamed up with the City of Houston under the banner of “Embracing the Oneness in Humanity” to host the city’s first-ever MLK Unity Parade. What is the MLK Unity Parade?
MLK Unity Parade is a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For the past three decades, the MLK Grande Parade and the Black Heritage Society’s Original Martin Luther King Jr. Parade have held parades honoring the icon.
Reflecting the accomplishments of the legendary civil rights leader, Houston’s inaugural MLK Unity Parade will be the first time that Houston’s two historical MLK Day parades have united as one.
When does the MLK Unity Parade in Houston take place?
The parade will begin on Monday, January 19, 2026 at 10 am. Officials expect the parade to last until around 1:00 pm.
Following the parade, a post-parade MLK Festival will take place at Tranquility Park. Featuring family-friendly activities, giveaways, and food vendors, the festival will run until around 4 pm.

Where will the MLK Unity Parade take place?
The MLK Unity Parade will begin in Downtown Houston at the intersection of Lamar Street and Smith Street. The parade will proceed up Smith St., turning right on Walker St. The parade will follow Milam St. down to Pease St., turning right on Louisiana St. Turning down Clay St., the parade will return to Smith St. where it will conclude at Dallas St.
What to expect of Houston’s MLK Unity Parade?
More than 300 groups will join the procession, featuring a massive showcase of elite marching bands, vibrant floats, and a coalition of Houston’s most influential community and religious figures.
Mayor John Whitmire, popular radio personality Madd Hatta, and MLK Grande Parade President Charles Stamps will serve as Grand Marshals of the inaugural parade in Houston.
