Houston’s premier summer theater tradition is back. The 2026 Houston Shakespeare Festival (HSF) returns to Hermann Park’s Miller Outdoor Theatre this summer, bringing two weeks of free, world-class theater to the city. Produced by the University of Houston’s School of Theatre & Dance, this year’s season pairs the wondrous spectacle of The Tempest with the riotous physical humor of The Comedy of Errors.
Running from July 30 through August 8, the festival continues a legacy started in 1975 by Dr. Sidney Berger. Over the decades, HSF has introduced hundreds of thousands of Houstonians to the Bard by blending seasoned Equity professionals with talented UH theater students in fully staged, grand-scale outdoor productions.
Magic and Redemption: The Tempest
The Tempest returns to the Miller Outdoor Theatre stage. Directed by HSF Executive Director Sharon Ott, this production features a fresh take on one of Shakespeare’s final masterpieces by casting the lead as Prospera—an all-powerful sorceress exiled to a remote island.
The festival promises a visually stunning production rich with spectacle, mystical spirits, and strobe lighting effects that will immerse the audience in Shakespeare’s “brave new world”.
Mayhem and Mirth: The Comedy of Errors
Audiences looking for nonstop laughs will find them in The Comedy of Errors, directed by HSF Artistic Director Jack Young. The ultimate tale of mistaken identity, the play follows two sets of long-lost twins who unexpectedly cross paths in the bustling port city of Ephesus.
Billed as a fast-paced physical comedy, this production leans into outrageous confusion and joyful surprise, proving that Shakespeare’s farces are just as vibrant and hilarious today as they were 400 years ago.

Here is what you need to know for the 2026 season:
All performances are entirely free to the public. Free tickets for the covered seating area are available online starting at 10:00 AM the day before each performance (up to four per person). A limited number of tickets are also held for in-person pickup at the box office one hour before showtime.
Open seating is always available on the hill, where you can bring a blanket or lawn chairs.
