We’ve known it all along, but now it’s official. Houston is the most diverse large city in the United States according to a study which also placed Space City as the fourth most overall diverse city in the country.
Personal finance company, Wallethub, recently conducted a study ranking 501 of the largest cities in the United States by diversity. The study leveraged cultural, household, religious, economic, and socioeconomic factors and found Houston to be the most diverse large city in the United States and fourth most overall diverse city for the second year in a row.
Houston got top notches in in socioeconomic diversity (27) and cultural diversity (31). In terms of religious diversity, the city trailed ranked at 54; while losing trailing slightly in terms of household diversity (112) and economic diversity (156).
Its highest scores, precisely, came in a linguistic diversity, in which Houston ranked at 25 out of the 501 cities, as well as industry diversity at 28, and educational-attainment diversity at 29.
The most overall diverse cities in the country according to the study include Gaithersburg, Silver Springs, and Germantown – all in Maryland.
Elsewhere in Texas, Arlington came in a the fifth most diverse city followed by Dallas which came in at 8th.
“The most diverse cities demonstrate diversity in many dimensions – not just in race and gender but also everything from residents’ languages and birthplaces to their job types and household sizes,” said Cassandra Happe WalletHub analyst in the report.
“These cities blend together a multitude of different perspectives, helping people to better understand the world around them and become more empathetic. This exchange of ideas also tends to increase the economic success of diverse cities.”
