Forecasters are predicting a hot muggy summer for Texas this year. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the entity responsible for supplying and managing the electrical power for the entire state, have released percentage chances for potential grid emergency with the possibility of rolling blackouts in August.
ERCOT’s recent report, under the heading Monthly Outlook for Resource Adequacy (MORA), highlights a risk outlook for the coming summer months in Texas. Published the first Friday of every month, the report evaluates resource adequacy for the upcoming month.
Furthermore the report determines the risk of emergency conditions. Based on the report, ERCOT expects a 16% chance energy reserves falling below 2,500 megawatts – triggering an Energy Emergency Alert (EEA).
Additionally, the report reveals a 12% probability that reserves could fall below 1,500 megawatts – which could lead to rolling blackouts throughout Texas in the month of August.
ERCOT has however proclaimed that it will have sufficient generation to meet customer demand under normal weather conditions.
“The report indicates that in the event of an extremely low wind scenario combined with high demand and decreasing solar generation during the evening hours (8-10 p.m.), there is an elevated risk of ERCOT declaring an Energy Emergency Alert (EEA),” the entity published in a post on Twitter/X.
In the wake of severe heat, the city – in partnership with Reliant and Harris County Precinct 2 – has launched the Beat The Heat Program comprising of 22 cooling centers across the city. Here residents can take refuge in emergency situations.
The community centers will be open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday and Wednesday; from 8 am to 9 pm Tuesday and Thursday, and from 8 am to noon on Fridays.
