At the time of this article, a Freeze Warning and Cold Weather Advisory are both in effect. While each is expected to lift later this morning – at 9 am and 11 am, respectively – the rest of the week will continue to bring Houston’s coldest temperatures thus far this winter as a cold front continues in the region.
Houston forecast this week
Effective as of midnight last night, a Freeze Warning remains in effect in Houston until 9 am this morning. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect until 11 am with wind chill values dipping from 20 to 10 degrees. The wind chill is likely to last throughout Monday. Officials recommend dressing in layers and keeping pets indoors.
Meteorologists expect for the cold to remain in Houston for the rest of the week with highs in the 40s and lows in the 30s. Sub freezing temperatures are also a possibility Tuesday morning.
From Thursday to Friday, a major winter storm could move into northern areas of Texas though for Houston sake, Thursday morning, there is a small chance that northern counties will experience ice Thursday morning.
Officials expect for temperatures to climb throughout the week, with temps somewhere in the 50s expected by the weekend.
ERCOT status
In wake of the present cold front and freezing temperatures, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a weather watch for Southeast Texas from Monday, January 6, to Friday, January 10. Due to the cold weather, high electrical demand is expected with the potential for lower reserves. That said, ERCOT maintains that grid conditions will be normal.
“ERCOT is monitoring conditions closely and will deploy all available tools to manage the grid, continuing a reliability-first approach to operations,” the agency states in a new release.
