There’s no end to the amount of incredible burger joints in Houston and surrounding areas. While we wouldn’t presume to name the best burger in the area, the people over at Reader’s Digest have done it for us. In its recent article “The Best Burgers In Every State“, the publication lauded Tookie’s Hamburgers in Kemah as the best burger joint in the Lonestar State.
Founded in 1975, Tookie’s Hamburgers is a retro burger shack located at 406 Texas Ave #2845 in Kemah. With its vintage decor and Americana, Tookie’s emulates the likes of a soda fountain or drug store.
Burgers at Tookie’s are served with homemade, super-sized beef patties, loaded with fresh, locally-grown produce as optional toppings. The burger shack offers classic options with no-frills burgers and cheeseburgers as well as house favorites like the #99 (A Champion Burger) and more creative options like the Spicy Mac Daddy beef burger served with mac and cheese, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, and fried pickles.
Other favorites at Tookie’s include the oversized, hand-battered Mamma Ethel’s Onion Rings, Pelican Eggs, and Tookie’s Steak Sandwich.
In addition to veggie burger options, Tookie’s also serves a variety of classic comfort foods ranging from sandwiches, hot dogs, shakes, malts, floats, and more.
Furthermore, Tookie’s also features a patio and full bar serving all sorts of cocktails, whiskies, beer, and other libations to put you in good spirits.
Here’s what Reader’s Digest had to say:
“When in the land of barbecue, head out of Houston and toward Kemah, where you’ll find a barbecue joint that offers – you guessed it – burgers, and more” the publication writes. “This ’70s-inspired spot has been serving perfectly charred burgers for more than 30 years, and you can’t go wrong with a Tookie’s classic cheeseburger.”
Tookie’s Hamburgers is located at 406 Texas Ave #2845 in Kemah, open from 11 am to 9 pm Sunday through Thursday and from 11 am to 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
