If you’re getting on top of vacay plans for next year, beware there are going to be some new travel requirements that may apply to you. Due to a new law effective in 2024, U.S. passport holders will need travel authorization from the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The new ruling intends to strengthen security with international travel.
According to Forbes, the program was approved in 2016 and was actually supposed to be rolled out last year (2022). The pandemic and “insufficient infrastructure” caused the delay.
Still have questions about this new travel authorization? Here’s everything you need to know.
What is ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorization System is a new travel authorization that will be required to travel and stay in participating countries for less than 90 days.
Who will this affect?
ETIAS will affect those who are not an EU national, those without a residence permit/card/document issued by a participating country requiring ETIAS, and those who are visa-exempt nationals from these countries.
What countries require ETIAS?
30 European countries will require ETIAS for visa-exempt nationals. You can find them here.
When will this officially roll out?
It is expected to be operational sometime in 2024.
What’s the application process?
How do you apply?
Travelers can apply online. Applicants will incur a EUR 7 fee. However, the fee will be waived for those under 18 and above 70.
What do you need to apply?
You will need a valid travel document that your ETIAS can be attached to. More specific details can be found here.
How long is your ETIAS valid for?
It will be good for whatever comes first: three years or until your passport expires.
