When does crawfish season in Houston begin?
While numerous restaurants have already begun to roll out crawfish specials this January, crawfish season in Houston generally takes place between February and May, peaking in March. That said, professionals predict that the peak might come as early as February with medium-to-large-sized crawfish.
“A lot of conditions have to come together, and a lot of things can change at the last minute, and so nothing is certain until the mudbugs are in the pot,” Brennan’s of Houston owner, Alex Brennan-Martin told Eater.
So if you’re not one to wait, you’re sure to find crawfish in Houston presently – just make sure that you don’t spoil your appetite by February/March when the crawfish are at their tastiest.
What will the prices of crawfish in season be?
Last year, a drought-lead decline in crawfish production in Louisiana – the largest producer in the state by a vast margin followed by Texas – lead to higher-than-normal prices with pounds of crawfish going as high as $10 per pound. Reports of the sub-standard season reached industry professionals as early as November.
This year, however, the signs are leading industry professionals to express optimism in regards to the supply of crawfish.
“I expect it to be a great season. By the time we hit March, which is more like your peak season, we’re going to see good-size crawfish, great-priced crawfish and just a really good peak season,” Clutch City Crawfish owner, Miles Garner, told Houston Public Media.
Garner also told the publication that he wouldn’t be surprised if crawfish prices in Houston were lower than normal – though it would depend on individual vendors.
