In 2022, Abbas Dhanani, opened his own smashburger brick-and-mortar, the New York-influenced Burger Bodega. Following instant and continued success, Dhanani is launching a new pop-up focused on a Philadelphia-inspired comfort food with his Bas’s Cheesesteak concept.
The Bas’s Cheesesteak pop-up is presently operated intermittently out the pick-up window of Burger Bodega Dhanani’s two-story rooftop burger joint on Washington Ave. For his new cheesesteaks, Dhanani serves sliced halal ribeye and white cheese on a seeded hoagie roll with options for onions and spicy sauce. Customers can also order a side of Burger Bodega’s signature fries and/or a Pudgy’s cookie.

“We have experimented with cheesesteaks as specials on the menu at Burger Bodega and received amazing feedback,” said Dhanani in a statement. “However, the cheesesteaks at Bas’s are the most refined versions we have done so far. I am excited to bring authentic Philly cheesesteaks to Houston as a new flavor experience while continuing to build on the energy and community we have created at Burger Bodega. This is a huge passion project for me, and I plan to take it step by step, just like Burger Bodega.”
At this point, it’s still uncertain if Dhanani’s cheesesteak pop-up concept will receive the brick-and-mortar treatment as he had done with Burger Bodega.
“We want to take it one step at a time and see where it goes,” Dhanani told CultureMap Houston.

Dhanani’s next Bas’s Cheesesteak pop-up takes place from 6 pm until sold-out on Monday, August 25. Pre-orders are available beginning at 11 am this Friday, August 22. Orders can be placed/picked-up at the pick-up window at Burger Bodega located at 4520 Washington Ave. Limit to two per person. The restaurant hosts pop-ups every other Monday. Eager eaters can find out when Bas’s Cheesesteaks’ next pop-ups are taking place via its Instagram page.
