In a recent article, Yelp sifted through reviews, ratings, and comments to discover the best sandwich shops in the country state-by-state. From hoagies to subs, lobster rolls, and everything in between, Yelp found that the best sandwich shop in Texas, is an Italian restaurant in the Houston area called Tony’s Italian Delicatessen.
The Italian deli came in at No. 4 on Yelp’s list of the best sandwich shops in the U.S. Located in Montgomery, with a location in Tomball, Tony’s Italian Deli is a regular feature to the Yelp list of best sandwiches – as well as its Top 100 Plaecs to Eat in Texas in 2023.
Self-described as a little deli with big flavor, Tony’s Italian Delicatessen is known for its expansive menu of handmade sandwiches prepared with high-quality meats, and cheeses. Its featured sandwiches are inspired by Italian figures, including The Pesci, The Corleone, and The Stallone – the latter a meat-lovers option “that keeps you coming back”.

However, its crown jewel and the best sandwich in Texas – again according to Yelp – is The Sophia. Named after the iconic Italian actress, The Sophia is a roasted turkey sandwich (picture above) comprised of marinated Roma tomatoes, roasted red peppers, Swiss cheese, a spring mix, topped with basil pesto mayo and sub oil – all served on a crusty Italian roll.
Here’s what Yelp had to say Tony’s:
“Yelpers proudly admit to driving 2 hours, just to satisfy a Tony’s sandwich craving… Tony’s has been elevating the simple sub since 2014,” the page reads. ” It starts with the bread, which fans rave about and say they can smell as soon as they walk in. Each sandwich — named after larger-than-life real or fictional Italian-Americans — is crafted with a “masterful blend of ingredients.'”

“Most talked about is the Stallone, served cold with ham, capicola, soprasetta, and salami, ‘amazing’ basil pesto, and marinated Roma tomatoes. The hot Lucky Luciano, on crusty Italian bread, is where pizza meets sammie, ‘generously stuffed’ with sweet Italian sausage, salami, marinara, and roasted red peppers. Roughly ‘the size of a youth football,’ the subs easily feed two to three people, say Yelpers, or are perfect for leftovers.”
Tony’s Italian Delicatessen now has two restaurants in the Houston area. Its flagship is located in Montgomery at 16283 Highway 105 W. Tony’s also has a location in Tomball at 24504 Kuykendahl Rd., Suite 100.
The deli’s Montgomery outpost is open from 11 am to 7:30 pm Tuesday through Friday; and from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday. Its Tomball location is open from 10:30 am to 8 pm Monday through Sunday.
The recent Yelp list included other Houston-area locations including: Q’s Deli in Sugar Land at No. 48, Las Tortas Perronas in Houston at No. 55, and Oliver’s Gourmet in Missouri City at No. 59.
