What is “We Call It Ballet”?
We Call It Ballet is an ode to the globally recognized artform and the many years of training every ballet dancer goes through to achieve top technical prowess. Still, the show is not your typical classical ballet because it blends dynamic music and choreography with LED lights incorporated in the dancers’ costumes. It’s an innovative approach that makes ballet more accessible for young and visually impaired audiences.
Ballet, its storytelling and the show
Through graceful and precise movements, incredibly gifted ballet dancers like Carlotta Brianza, Martha Graham or Anna Pavlova tell a story in a unique way. Take The Sleeping Beauty for instance. The iconic ballet is celebrated for its ability to evoke emotions simply through movement. Thus, We Call It Ballet in Houston will recreate this iconic piece, adding optical fibers to the dancers’ intricate costumes. Additionally, new music pieces composed specifically for the ballet, to highlight the ballerinas’ gravity-defying twists and turns.
As the evil Fairy Carabosse curses Princess Aurora to 100 years’ slumber, the lights worn by the ethereal ballerinas will take an emotional turn through shades of blue, gray and purple, hinting at the princess’ doomed fate. However, when the battle against evil is won (spoiler alert), you’ll see their costumes aglow with vibrant colors during Aurora and Desiré’s Pas de Deux. What’s more, there’ll be a narrator at hand to briefly explain the plot and the characters, enhancing the whole experience.
We Call It Ballet is a dazzling event. Take your seat at the Resurrection MCC and enjoy a unique dance and light show right here in the city.
The show is available on selected dates over the coming months with two 60-minute showings on each date. Doors open 30 minutes prior to the show and tickets are sold in tiers starting at $55 , depending on the proximity to the stage.
