Some people are just born cool. And you just know that’s the case for Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk, the grandchild of skateboarding legend Tony Hawk and late Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain. Recently, Tony Hawk took to Instagram to reminisce on the first time he saw Kurt Cobain – which was at a Nirvana concert in Houston.
The Nirvana concert took place at The Vatican in Houston. Formerly located in what’s now known as East Downtown or EaDo, the independent venue was housed in a repurposed church turned DIY venue. The Vatican operated throughout the nineties as a staple in Houston’s alternative scene, staging underground, punk, and hardcore shows including bands such as Nirvana, The Misfits, and GWAR.
Tony Hawk recently shared a photograph of the concert stub from the Nirvana show at The Vatican in Houston. The concert took place on October 20, 1991, and per the stub, was priced at just $10 – around $23 today.
Hawk accompanied the photograph with a heartfelt message:
“Went straight from S.U.A.S event at Houston skatepark to this concert in 1991. It was as transformative as live music can possibly be. We all experienced something rare and powerful that night. The world would never be the same,” Hawk wrote.
“I wish Kurt were here so he could see the incredible woman his daughter has become, meet her devoted, caring husband, and hold our wondrous grandchild.”
Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk is the child of Tony Hawk’s son Riley Hawk and Francis Bean Cobain daughter of Kurt Cobain and Hole front-woman Courtney Love. Riley Hawk, is a professional skateboarder himself, riding for renowned companies such as Baker and Lakai. Riley Hawk is also the co-owner of Steel Mill Coffee shop in Oceanside, California.
Francis Bean Cobain is a visual artist, musician, and model has published art pieces under the pseudonym “Fiddle Tim”. Her godparents are Drew Barrymore and R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, the latter officiated the Hawk/Cobain wedding.
