Across Texas, flags are being lowered in remembrance of country music icon and philanthropist Dolly Parton, who died at the age of 80 yesterday, August 25.
In conjunction with the White House order of U.S. flags flown at half-staff nationwide, Texas Governor Greg Abbott released a gubernatorial order directing Texas flags to half-staff through sunset September 1.
Per the official Texas government website:
“Pursuant to Chapter 3100 of the Texas Government Code, Texas flags should be lowered statewide immediately to half-staff in honor of the life and public service of Dolly Rebecca Parton. Flags should remain at half-staff for seven days through sunset on Tuesday, September 1, 2026″.
Over her legendary six-decade career, Parton captivated audiences across the state, leaving an indelible mark on Texas country culture – including an unforgettable performance at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on March 5, 1978.
“From the RODEOHOUSTON stage in 1978 to the hearts of millions around the world, Dolly Parton has always been more than a performer,” the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo wrote in an Instagram post. “Her songs, spirit and generosity shaped generations, leaving a legacy that will forever shine”.
Her influence also reached Greater Houston through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The literacy program mails free, age-appropriate books each month to enrolled children from birth until age 5; locally, the Imagination Library of Greater Houston partners with Harris County Public Library.
Multiple Houston businesses are hosting tributes to Dolly Parton tonight, August 26. Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar is hosting a free tribute in the Heights from 7 pm, with live music, DJ sets, sing-alongs, costumes and food.
In the East End, Voodoo Queen Daiquiri Dive will play Parton classics and offer themed cocktails and Nashville hot chicken, while Las Perras Café presents a Dolly-themed lotería night and karaoke. Lil Danny Speedo’s Go Fly A Kite Lounge adds an all-Dolly late-night set from 10 pm to 1:30 am.
