Winter isn’t done with Texas just yet folks. While the state has experienced nearly record-breaking heat over the course of the holiday season, Texas is bracing for a belated visit from Jack Frost this weekend as temperatures dip into near freezing territory.
Winter Warmth
Without knowledge of a calendar, anyone in Texas might have figured it was spring in Texas over the past few months. Houston itself has been on a heater, as it were, with 15°F to 20°F above normal temperatures and breaking winter high temperatures.
On the second day of the year, Houston hit 84°F, breaking the previous daily record of 81°F. On January 6, Houston set another record high of 82°F breaking the record of the previously set 80°F in 1959 and 1989.
This past year, the city set a Houston all-time high record of days at or above 80°F in a single year with 259 days, or otherwise, 71% of the year.
Arctic Blast
This weekend, Houston will experience a proper winter. Forecasters expect a cold front to move into the Houston area late Friday into early Saturday, Sunday, and into next week. .
The weekend low temperatures are forecasted between 40°F – 45°F with a chance of possible thunderstorms on Friday night. Highs this weekend are estimated between 58°F – 62°F.
For our Houston Marathon runners, you can expect for starting line temperatures to be around the mid-40°F mark. There might be light wind, but at least you won’t have to worry about rain.

Will it Freeze in Houston this weekend?
While the cold temperatures might startle some after the Houston heat wave, experts consider a free very unlikely. For what it’s worth, ERCOT reports sufficient generation to meet demand as of this week.
