What is the Perseid Meteor Shower?
Every year, Earth passes through the trail of debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, producing the Perseid meteor shower. As these small particles enter the upper atmosphere at high speeds, they vaporize, creating bright streaks of light across the night sky.
Visible throughout the Northern Hemisphere, the Perseids are a deep-rooted tradition of skywatching. Ancient astronomers first recorded the phenomenon as early as 36 AD, and humanity has been tracking its annual return ever since. The shower takes its name from the constellation Perseus, the area of the sky where the meteors appear to originate.

Widely considered the premier celestial event of the year by seasoned skywatchers, the Perseids produce an impressive 50 to 100 meteors per hour at their peak—putting on an unmissable display of cosmic fireworks.
When is the 2026 Perseid Meteor Shower?
For Houston, the 2026 Perseid meteor shower is active from about July 17 to August 24, with its strongest activity on the night of Wednesday, August 12, into Thursday morning, August 13. The American Meteor Society lists the peak as August 12–13, with a new Moon providing excellent dark-sky conditions.
Where to see the meteor shower in Houston?
Houston’s urban light pollution will inevitably wash out some of the display in the city center, limiting visibility to roughly 7 to 16 meteors per hour. For a dramatically better view, head to the darker skies of the suburbs or rural areas, where you can expect to catch between 17 and 40 shooting stars an hour under favorable conditions.
