Just a short drive from Houston in the small town of Bellville is a medieval castle straight out of a European village. In all its old world glory, Newman’s Castle features everything from a moat to a massive 3,000-pound drawbridge, perimeter wall, and more.
The late Michael Newman was far from your average Texan. As the owner/operator of Newman’s Bakery, Newman turned out scratch-made donuts, croissants, and decadent French toast for the residents of Bellville. But his business footprint goes well beyond baked goods—he was also the creator of a full-scale medieval castle.
Inspired by travels across Europe in his twenties, he decided to build a castle. Nestled in the rolling countryside of Bellville, Newman built a handmade castle – sparing no expense. As it stands, the castle features a moat with a massive drawbridge, five corner turrets, a chapel, a portcullis, and a central courtyard, all constructed brick by brick.
In addition to its awe-inspiring facade, the interior is adorned with an austere dining table, chandeliers, high-backed chairs, a winding staircase, and arched wooden ceilings.
Michael Neman passed away in 2024. The castle is presently operated by his family or the “Castle Keepers”.
Planning a visit? Newman’s Castle welcomes guests six days a week for guided tours, as well as private events and overnight stays. You’ll need to reserve your spot in advance by calling the bakery at 979-865-9804 or castle directly at 979-487-6753. Tours are available between 10:30 am – 1 pm Monday through Saturday, where visitors are invited to meet beforehand at Newman’s Bakery at 504 E. Main St. The castle is closed for tours on Sundays.
The castle has two, 2-person rooms in the castle available for overnight stays. Starting around $100 a night, rooms feature stone walls, candle sconces, rich tapestries, and four-poster beds. More information can be found here.
Admission is priced at $20 for adults and around $10 for children (6 and under). Admission includes a lunch courtesy of Newman’s Bakery.
