Houston is a great city for cinephiles. Whether watching an arthouse production at River Oaks Theatre, a quote-a-long on a rooftop, or the latest blockbuster inside a luxury cinema: there’s a theater for every flavor of movie-goer. For those fans of films with large-scale visuals and immersive sound like Dune, Interstellar, or Oppenheimer: here’s some good news: a new IMAX theater is coming to Houston.
This past Monday, Regal Cinemas and IMAX announced an expansion of their partnership with four new IMAX and Laser theaters in the United States. The expansion will bring four new IMAX theaters to the largest metropolitan areas in the United States, including two in Los Angeles, one Gainesville in Washington, and one at Regal Greenway Grand Palace in Houston.
“At Regal, we are committed to providing the latest and most innovative technologies in our theatres with the overall goal of delivering the best moviegoing experience for our guests,” said CEO of Regal Cineworld Group, Eduardo Acuna, in a press release.
“Through our partnership with IMAX, we are able to expand on this commitment by bringing their most advanced entertainment experience to some of our top performing locations.”
The new IMAX experience at Regan Greenway Grand Palace will feature IMAX with Laser. According to the press release, it is “IMAX’s most advanced entertainment experience”, featuring a 4k laser projection system designed to provide an immersive experience through lifelike images, amplified resolution, and the most expansive range of colors on screen.
“Passionate moviegoing audiences in major metropolitan areas fuel our growth,” said IMAX CEO, Rich Gelfond in a press release, “and we’re excited to expand our partnership with Regal Cineworld and give our fans even more ways to experience it in IMAX.”
The press release that three of the four theaters would open this year – though it didn’t clarify which ones. The remaining theater will open in 2026 – so in any case, if you’re hoping to see Christopher Nolan’s upcoming production The Odyssey in IMAX in Houston, you’ll know where to go.
