A Winter Storm Warning goes into effect beginning at 6 am Monday morning until 6 pm Tuesday. Forecasters predict that the storm will bring heavy mixed precipitation with total snow accumulations up to 5 inches in Metro areas. Forecasters are predicting that the winter storm will bring as much as 3 to 5 inches of snow accumulation in some Houston area. Officials expect for the snowfall to begin overnight into Tuesday morning. The biggest snowstorm in Houston history occurred on Valentine’s Day in 1895, in which the city experienced 20 inches of snow – 15 inches in Galveston.
While the Winter Storm Watch is in effect, experts advise against local traveling unless absolutely necessary. Those driving should ensure beforehand that their vehicles are winterized and should exercise extreme caution when driving.
On midnight Tuesday, the Houston Airport System will suspend all area flights through the duration of the storm – including Ellington Airport (EFD), George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). The Houston Airport System will monitor the inclement weather to determine when it will lift the suspension of flights.
Furthermore, the Texas Children’s hospital will be cancelling all outpatient appointments on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
