Your next trip to the Galleria is about to come with an extra charge—even before you hit the shops.
Starting Monday, November 2, Houston’s sprawling shopping destination will introduce paid parking in its previously free self-parking garages. The new system will charge visitors according to how long they stay, with fees ranging from $2 to $25.
Whether you’re stopping in for lunch, picking up a gift, or settling in for a full afternoon of shopping, here’s what to know before pulling into a garage.

How much will parking at the Galleria cost?
The announced self-parking rates are:
- Up to four hours: $2
- Four to seven hours: $5
- Seven to 24 hours: $25
Those are charges for the parking session—not hourly rates. That means a shorter shopping trip will start at $2, while a longer visit could bring a considerably higher bill. The published time bands overlap at four and seven hours, so check the posted garage signage for the exact cutoff rules.
Which parking garages are affected?
The change will introduce charges in the Galleria’s Yellow, Brown, Green, Orange, and Red garages, ending the complimentary self-parking previously available in those areas. Some express-parking areas and valet services already carry a charge.
In other words, this isn’t the first time visitors have paid to park at the Galleria—but it does mean the familiar free-garage option is going away.

Can you get your parking validated?
Possibly—but don’t assume a purchase will automatically cover the fee.
According to the announcement, individual retailers may offer parking validation at their discretion. A list of participating businesses, along with any spending requirements or validation limits, had not been announced in the available reporting. Employees will continue to receive free parking in designated areas.
If you’re heading to a particular store or restaurant, check with the business directly about whether it will validate your visit.
Why is the Galleria introducing parking fees?
Mall owner Simon Property Group describes the rollout as a “modern parking system,” saying it is intended to provide convenient parking for visitors coming to shop, dine, and enjoy the property. Its statement did not provide a detailed explanation for introducing the charges.
The announcement also leaves some practical details unresolved, including payment procedures and whether drivers will receive a grace period for a quick drop-in.
For now, the key date for your calendar is November 2: after that, a trip to one of the Galleria’s previously free garages will need a place in your shopping budget.
