The Houston Independent School District (HISD) Board of Managers has voted unanimously to permanently close or consolidate 12 campuses at the end of the 2025–26 school year.
The 9–0 vote approved Superintendent Mike Miles’ proposal to reorganize the district’s footprint. The affected campuses will continue to operate normally through the rest of the current school year, with closures and co-locations officially taking effect in early June 2026.
Students will begin attending their newly assigned or chosen schools in the 2026–27 academic year.

Why is HISD closing schools?
HISD has voted to close and consolidate area schools for three primary reasons: declining enrollment, facility costs, and “Accelerate Houston” initiative.
District leaders project that shutting down and merging these 12 schools will save between $14.6 million and $20 million each year. HISD plans to funnel these savings directly into the receiving campuses to enhance academic programs, boost staffing, and upgrade facilities.

This service will be available regardless of normal transportation eligibility and will include multiple morning and afternoon runs.
